The Cod Fishery in the Atlantic Region
What: Cod is a fish found in the Atlantic Region. 70% of cod were lost because of over-fishing. The Canadian government made laws (moratorium) about how much people can fish cod.
Where: Atlantic Region - Newfoundland
When: People fished cod from 1500 – 1900, the law was made in 1992.
Why: The number of cod fish were decreasing. A large net was used to fish cod, the net was dropped and picked up all kinds of fish and dragged along the ocean floor. This also damaged the ecosystem. If they stopped fishing cod, they thought the numbers would increase.
Who: This affected the fishing industry; 30 000 - 40 000 people; this changed their way of life
Moratorium: Season is open for a few weeks in the summer. Recreational fishermen are limited to five cod fish per day. However, the maximum boat limit when three or more people are fishing is 15 cod fish. This includes tour boats.

Pros:
- The Federal government stopped the cod fishing industry - fisherman were paid $4 000 when the fishery ended - hopefully the cod fish would we populate; making a comeback in Newfoundland - stopping the fishing of cod will help will help it’s prey and predators - hopefully the laws will help increase biodiversity - cod can live longer - people have learned not to use large nets for fishing |
Cons:
- Cod fish numbers were decreasing and could become extinct - fisheries could target other types of fish - 30 000 - 40 000 people lost their jobs - demand for seafood is high – cod is popular - people started to eat more lobster, fish, eels - nets destroyed the ecosystem - other fish were caught in the nets - people are leaving the Atlantic region to look for jobs |
