Our class attended Nature School from September 30 - October 4, 2013! Each day that week we took the bus to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary to explore, learn about and study the environment. The Inglewood area has two distinct ecosystems. One ecosystem is the Bird Sanctuary, which is one of three, highly protected natural areas in Calgary. The Sanctuary recently suffered significant destruction to its ecosystem during the flood. The second ecosystem is the Inglewood Wildlands where the once wetland ecosystem was developed into an oil refinery plant. In recent years, humans have been trying to reconstruct that environment back into its natural state.
Your Task:
You will become an ecologist. Your job at Nature School will be to study and research the interactions among organisms and their environment in the Inglewood ecosystems.
You will be placed into a small group, which will further investigate a topic that you have inquired about at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Your group will share your information as a Ted Talk at our O.S. Geiger Eco-Conference.
By the end of this inquiry you will be able to understand and explain in your own words:
1. The importance of ecosystems
2. The importance of protecting ecosystems
3. The impact of natural disasters on ecosystems
4. The impact of humans on ecosystems
